Martley Footpaths

Martley Footpaths

The Parish of Martley in Worcestershire has a network of footpaths totaling around 42 miles, including 60km of footways and 7km of bridleways. These paths were established as public rights of way after the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act of 1949. Interest in maintaining these paths has grown, recognizing walkers’ rights similar to those on public roads.

In 1985, volunteers led by Mr. Keith Trumper, the first Footpaths Officer of Martley parish, formed a group called “The Path-or-Nones” to improve local rights of way. This group, known for their effective work, has made Martley’s footpath network one of the most complete and well-signposted in Worcestershire. They engage in activities like clearing undergrowth and installing bridges, stiles, steps, and signposts. For those interested in joining, contact Mervyn Hardwell at mervyn.hardwell@yahoo.com or 0780 196 7913.

The efforts are supported by Worcestershire County Council through the Parish Paths Partnership (P3), managed by Martley Parish Council. Mervyn Hardwell currently leads the group, following John Nicklin in 2023. While “The Path-or-Nones” do not organize walks, they have created pamphlets for circular walks in the parish.
